Sibiu - Streets & Squares
Large Square (Piata Mare)
The Large Square dates back before the 15th century as a cereals square. Since the 16th century it became the center of the old town. The public executions and public meetings used to be held here. For hundreds of years it was named Grosser Ring or Grosser Platz, between the wars being named King Ferdinand Square. The communists named it the Square of the Republic, since 1990 its name being Piata Mare. With 142m length and 93m wide, the square is one of the biggest in Transylvania. The Southern side of the square is part of the UNESCO patrimony. The most important building in the square is Haller House, built in 15th century, in Renaissance style. Also, on the same side there are other important buildings like Fileck House or the house of the former major Georg Hecht.
On the North side there are the Catholic Church with its Parochial House. These buildings are continued with a construction which hosted the Old City Hall. Linked to the Old City Hall there is the Tower of the City Hall. Under the tower, a passage links the Large Square to the Small Square.
Other buildings around the square are Weidner Reussner House, Brukenthal Palace and Blue House.
Very interesting are so called "the eyes of the city", representing small windows in the buildings' roof.
Small Square (Piata Mica)
It is placed on the territory included in the second line of fortifications. The West side is represented by a series of houses which are representing in the same time the Eastern side of the Huet Square. Built in the 14th-16th centuries, the square, a former commercial center of the old fortress, is linked to the Huet and Large Square through narrow streets and tunnels. Among these narrow streets there is the beautiful Goldsmiths' Passage. Around the square the most important buildings are the House of Arts, Goldsmiths' House, the Old City Hall and the Bridge of Lies.
Stairs' Passage & Tower (Pasajul & Turnul Scarilor)
The Stairs Passage is a link between upper town and lower town. It surrounds through 2 ramified stairs the citadel's walls. The stairs, built in the 13th century, are keeping the original aspect. The Southern wing ends in the upper part with the Stairs Tower, the oldest building in Sibiu, built in the 13th century. The tower is a construction made from brick, having one floor which in 1897 was arranged into a house. Under this floor there is an arched passage. Near the tower there is a building almost as old as the tower, hosting a restaurant called "Butoiul de Aur" (Gold Barrel).
Goldsmiths' Square, Passage & Tower (Piata, Pasajul & Turnul Aurarilor)
The Goldsmiths' Square is named in this way because here were the workshops of the goldsmiths. Three streets are starting up from the square, among them being Movilei Street, one of the most picturesque streets in Sibiu. Another incredible beautiful street starts from Goldsmiths' Square, reaching the Small Square through the Goldsmiths' Passage which preserved its original aspect since 1567. At the end of the passage there is a tower called the Goldsmiths' Tower. It is a two-storied building, the ground level being pierced by a passage in a cross shape. The upper floors host rooms used as a dwelling.
Huet Square (Piata Mica)
Dominated by the Evangelic Cathedral, the Huet Square is surrounded by important constructions like the Tower of Stairs or the Evangelic Parochial House. The Stairs' Passage, one of the most picturesque places in Sibiu, starts from the square.
