Viscri Fortress
Viscri fortified church Viscri (Weiskirich in the Saxon dialect, Weißkirch in German or Fehéregyháza in Hungarian), 91km (56mi) north-west of Brasov, is known mainly for two reasons, one known for centuries and the other known for the recent history and much more ephemeral. The first reason is the Saxon church of Romanesque type, one of the oldest, while the second motif is represented by the Prince Charles of Wales who runs Mihai Eminescu Trust which renovates the old Saxon monuments and houses of the southern Transylvania. Not small are the chances to meet Prince Charles while you are visiting the church or the alleys of the village.
Although the locality is mentioned for the first time only in 1400 under the name of Alba Ecclesia, it seems the German colonists founded this town in the 12th century on the place of a previous Szekler locality from the 10th-11th century.
The Romanesque hall-church contains a donjon attached later to the walls and watching towers. Part of the UNESCO heritage list since 1990, the church is surrounded by huge walls with protective towers, the main tower being 10m (33ft) high. Traces of the old gate can be seen on the southern side. The citadel was used as a hiding place by villagers when the Tartars attacked them. Today it is still in use by a small Evangelical community.
