Brasov - Mountains
The Tampa Mountain
Brasov is located at the feet of the Postavaru Mountain, part of the Eastern Carpathians. The highest peak is just 1799m (5902ft). It offers about 30 hiking trails of different difficulties and some very beautiful bicycling routs.
This mountain is also known because of Poiana Brasov resort, one of the most famous sky resorts in Romania. Founded in 1895, the resort is a peaceful oasis where you can easily forget the cities’ worries. In 1909 Poiana Brasov organized the first sky competition in Romania. During the communist regime, many hotels, a skate ring and sky lifts were built. Today, it is probably the main winter resort of Romania.
Another famous mountain, part of the Postavaru range, is the Tampa Mountain. Brasov is located right at the feet of this mountain which is 960m (3149ft) high. A large part of this mountain is a national park because it shelters many species of animals and plants. There are more options to reach its peak. There are different hiking trails; one of them was connecting Brasov to the old fortress built on this mountain which later was destroyed. There is a cable car which in less than 3 minutes reaches the top where there is a restaurant and a deck from where you can have an astonishing view over Brasov, about 400m (1312ft) down.
In 1946 the Tampa Mountains suffered a fire and later, when the city’s name had already been changed into The City of Stalin, the trees were planted in a way they would form the word “Stalin”. In the 60s the old name was adopted again and the gaps of the word were planted with trees.
