Brasov - Streets & Squares

Brasov - Old City Hall Square The Town Hall Square
The Council Square is the main tourist attraction of today, the center of the old town. About 700 years ago this square was used by the locals as a market place but only in 1520 officially obtained the right to held markets here. Beside this function, the square was the used as a gathering point for the inhabitants and the place were once the pole of infamy stood. A tragic moment was recorded in 1688 when the leader of the Shoemaker Guild was beheaded by the Austrians. In the middle there is a water fountain, a reminiscence of the old wells which once stood in the market.
The Town Hall Square of Brasov is known for its most important building, the Town Hall, erected in 1420, today a museum. It is surrounded by important and valuable buildings such as the Hirscher House, the Orthodox Cathedral, the Muresan House or the famous Black Church. It offers good views toward the Tampa Mountain or the White and Black Towers. Surrounded by many bars, restaurants and terraces, perfect places for a good meal or drink, the square is connected to the Republicii Street, the most important and busiest pedestrian alley in the old town.

Brasov - Rope Street The Rope Street
The Rope Street is a link between Cerbului Street and Poarta Schei Street. It is 80m (262ft) long and its width ranges between 111cm (43in) and 135cm (53in) being one of the narrowest streets in Europe, although definitely not the narrowest. The street is mentioned for the first time in a document in the 17th century. The Rope Street, or Strada Sforii as it is known in Romanian, was corridor cut in order to make the access to the center of the old town much easier for the firefighters. It was renovated in 2003.
Brasov - Walls' Alley Along the Walls Alley
The western side of the citadel offers one of the quietest areas of Brasov but also a strong medieval atmosphere. The narrow alley called Dupa Ziduri (Behind the Walls) starts right next to the Blacksmiths’ Bastion, continues along the small Graft river, leaves in its left the White Tower and reaches the Graft Bastion and the arch behind of it.
Flanked by the old medieval walls and the Warthe Hill, this shadowed alley offers a cool atmosphere in the hot summers.
The Scheii Brasovului District
Brasov was not a town just for Germans but a town of Romanians, too. In fact, the Romanians were the first one to live in the area of Brasov. They had founded a small village called Cutun where the defenders of the first citadel were living. When the Germans colonized these territories, the Romanians lost gradually many of their rights and they were forced to live outside the German citadel in a Romanian neighborhood known as Scheii Brasovului.
Today this district of Brasov, with a strong rural atmosphere, consists of many old houses, churches, narrow and windy roads and small gardens. It has a very beautiful exit toward the Stones of the Solomon, part of the Postavaru Mountain. The main tourist attraction of this neighborhood is given by the Saint Nicholas Church built in 1495.
