About Romania - Geography
Black Sea, located in the South-East of Romania and Europe, is a continental sea with an area of 413 488 sq. km, a medium depth of 1282m, and 2245m maximum depth at about 120km of the Turkish coasts. Black Sea communicates with the Sea of Marmara through Bosporus Strait and further on, through Dardanelles, with Aegean and Mediterranean Sea.
The Romanian seaside of the Black Sea, known in antiquity as Pontus Euxinus, has a length of 244 km. It stretches from the northern Danube arm called Chilia, all the way to the border with Bulgaria, in south.
Without powerful tides, The Black Sea's water has a reduced salinity, only 17%. Being oriented towards East, the seashore offers every morning, splendid sunrises.
Beside other entertainments, like tennis, mini-golf, bowling or water sports, the lakes from the vicinity of the littoral, such as Techirghiol, Agigea, Costinesti, Agighiol, Nuntasi, have an extraordinary curative value. Also, historical vestige and relics like Greek fortresses from 7th and 6th centuries BC can be visited. Among them are Histria, Tomis (present-day Constanta) and Calatis (Mangalia).
Since the last century, sea resorts like Costinesti, Mamaia, Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud, Neptun-Olimp, Jupiter, Cap Aurora, Venus, Saturn, Mangalia, started to be modernized.
Mamaia
As the major Romanian resort at the Black Sea and also the oldest, Mamaia, situated in the northern part of Constanta, between beach and Siutghiol Lake, has tens of large and small hotels, nightclubs, restaurants and other entertainments.
With a beach long for 8km and wide for 100-200m, Mamaia has a picturesque place called Vacation Village with tens of shops from where you can buy traditional objects.
In 2003 Aqua Magic was built, a water park stretched on 2ha. It is the first water park from Romania. Also, in 2004, a modern cable railway was built. It crosses the resort for 2.2km at a height of 50m with a speed at 5m/s.
Eforie Nord
Renowned in all Europe for its hydropathic tourism, Eforie Nord spa, protected by offshore dams that prevent sea waves and currents to reach the sea walls, lies 14km south of Constanta, between sea and Techirghiol Lake. Eforie Nord is one of the few small resorts on the Romanian seaside which is open 12 months, offering a great variety of massages, mud baths and electro-therapy. The resort is one of the cheapest around the area, the atmosphere relaxed and the Romanian middle class the main visitors. With many discos, restaurants, with a beach long for 4km, Eforie Nord worth to be visited.
Eforie Sud
Having in the inter-war period "Carmen Silva" name, after the poetess pseudonym taken by Queen Elisabeta of Romania, Eforie Sud is located a bit further south than its twin resort. A resort since 1912, Eforie Sud is renowned for its mud and heliotherapy treatments, main attraction being "Baile Reci" for its baths with mud.
Costinesti
Located at 31km South of Constanta, Costinesti is the summer capital of youth. German colonists built it in 1949 when the first summer camp for pupils took place here. It has a 5km long beach wide for about 100-200m with a view over a big shipwreck.
Young lifestyle from here can't be seen in other Romanian resorts. With many discos, playing fields, clubs, nautical bases, Costinesti is the house of entertainments.
Neptun-Olimp
Once the most elegant and luxurious resorts of the Romanian littoral, Neptun and Olimp, situated 38km south of Constanta and 6km north of Mangalia, near a beautiful thick forest, called Comorova, and in the vicinity of two sweet-water lakes, are probably the best locations on the Romanian Black Sea coast. Being true spots for foreigners tourists, Neptun and Olimp are not just nice resorts but also, renowned health resorts.
Neptun offers many recreation options like The Summer Theatre, Neptun Bazaar, nautical sports, many restaurants with plenty Romanian food and folklore music.
Jupiter-Cap Aurora
Small and stylish, Jupiter, situated 5km North of Mangalia, between sea and Comorova forest, having in the center Tismana Lake, is a new resort with more than 15 hotels.
Cap Aurora, being placed on a rocky promontory, built in 1973 is the newest resort of the littoral. Also, the resort is indicated for curative treatments.
Venus
Bearing the name of the beauty goddess, Venus is remarkable for its stylish hotels with girl names. This resort, where you can practice canoeing and equitation (at the Mangalia stud farm), with the possibility of renting horses for long rides, is situated 3km North of Mangalia and 41km South of Constanta.
Saturn
With two vacation villages, called Dunarea and Delta, with one camping, restaurants, with bars and summer gardens, with more than twenty hotels, Saturn is located 43km south of Constanta and 1km north of Mangalia, in a quiet bay. In 2003, a small water park called Aqua Park Balada was opened. With a wide beach, protected by 6 dams, the entrance in sea is very gentle.
Mangalia
Second town of littoral, Mangalia, situated only 8km north of the border to Bulgaria, being as old as Tomis (present-day Constanta), was founded in antiquity by Greek colonists who came from Heracleea Pontica. Its name was Callatis (from the Calle river located in Minor Asia). With more than 40 000 inhabitants, with fine beaches, Mangalia port is a true historic place, boasting the ruins of Callatis fortress, Esmahan Sulatan Mosque, built in Moorish style, in 16th century, Archaeology Callatis Museum, Art Museum and a very interesting collection of pipes, clocks, prints and lithographs. In every year, Mangalia, with its beautiful beaches, is the host of musical festival called "Callatis".
2 Mai-Vama Veche
These two villages, in the last years have become in great demand for their nonconformist atmosphere, isolation and wildness. In Vama Veche, like in Costinesti, there is a shipwreck who adds a melancholic note to the atmosphere. Accommodation can be made in guesthouses or if you like the sound of guitars, the parties near the camp fires, you can stay in a tent on the beach.
