Romania is situated in Central Europe, in the northern part of the Balkan peninsula and its territory is marked by the Carpathian Mountains, the Danube and the Black Sea. On the European continent it is situated in the southeast, about equal distances from the continent extremities (2900km).
Its neighbours are: in the north, Ukraine, in the west Hungary, in the southwest Serbia-Montenegro, in the south Bulgaria, in the east the Black Sea and the ex-Romanian province Moldavia.

Romania is a Carpathians country; 66 % of the Carpathian Mountains are situated in this country. Also, 38 % of the length of the Danube is in Romania. In the east, Romania's Black Sea coastline stretches for 244 km.

Romanian Carpathians are surrounded by hills and plains. In the west by the West Hills and Plain, in the south by the Romanian Plain and in the east by the Moldova Plateau. In the east, between the Black Sea and Danube, lies Dobrogea Plateau.
